Weight Management Council Applauds Research by Commercial Weight Loss Industry: Reminds Consumers to Look for the Logo
The results of a global randomised controlled trial, published in the Lancet this week, showed that over the course of a year participants in a Weight Watchers program lost twice as much weight as did those in a general practice based weight management program.
The trial, conducted by the UK Medical Research Council, compared the effectiveness of GP weight management care to the Weight Watchers program and involved participants in Australia, Germany and the UK.
Weight Watchers is a member of the Weight Management Council Australia (WMCA).
WMCA Independent Chairperson, Professor Gary Wittert stated that the Council encourages its members as part of their compliance with the Weight Management Code of Practice to collect data and initiate and publish studies on the efficacy of their products and programs.
The WMCA administers the Weight Management Code of Practice and is managed by a board of directors consisting of an Independent Chairperson, representatives of the Industry and the Australian Nutrition Foundation and the Consumers Federation of Australia.
Consumers are advised, when seeking weight loss services, to look for the Weight Management Council Logo.
